An Introduction to Wenshan University
The National Southwestern Teacher School, the predecessor of Wenshan University was moved to the south of Yunnan province from Zhaotong to Wenshan in 1947, based on which Wenshan Teacher Training School was founded in 1955 and then the government of Yunnan Province approved to establish Wenshan People's College with the establishment of the Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Nationalities Autonomous Prefecture in 1958. With the foundation of Wenshan Teacher Training School and the approval of the Yunnan Provincial government, Wenshan Teacher College was formally founded in 1984. The school was officially upgraded into undergraduate university by the Ministry of Education named in 2009. Wenshan University is a full-time undergraduate institution and a model school for applied undergraduate talent development in Yunnan Province. It is the first university in the province jointly established by the Yunnan Provincial Department of Education and the Wenshan Prefectural People's Government.
The Wenshan University campus covers an area of 874.98 mu (acres) with 261.3000 square meters of facility area. There are 1,000,000 works in the library with an estimated total value of 1.16 billion Chinese Yuan and an estimated total value for the facilities of 817 million Chinese Yuan. There are 751 faculty and staff in the school, 650 of which are full-time teachers.
Wenshan University has established nine second-level institutes with 48 undergraduate programs and 13 three-year programs, covering literature, science, engineering, education, arts, history, law, management, agriculture and economics.
Wenshan University has nine second-level institutes including the School of Humanities and Media, the School of Education, the School of Economics and Management, the School of Marxism, the School of Art and Design, the School of Artificial Intelligence, the School of Notoginseng Pharmacy, the School of Metallurgy and Material and the Higher Vocational and Technical School. 12376 students are recruited from more than twenty provinces and federal districts (directly-governed municipalities) across China.
With a view to constructing a university distinctively focused on applied technology, Wenshan University established three academic and research centers: the Wenshan Sanqi Notoginseng (Panax notoginseng) Research Institute, the Wenshan Ethno-biology Resources Development and Research Center, and the Minority Ethnic Cultural Heritage and Innovation Research Center. In addition, the university has also established some national and provincial research centers and labs, such as the "Notoginseng Research Base of the Institute of Chinese Materia Medica of CACMS", the"Yunnan Province Center for the Development and the Utilization of Local Botanical Resources," the"Yunnan Notoginseng Engineering Technology and Research Center", and the "Yunnan Notoginseng Agriculture Engineering Laboratory." An academic periodical entitled The Journal of Wenshan University is published for domestic and international distribution, with more than 4800 institutional subscribers in seventeen different countries and territories. The faculty has about three hundred research projects of all levels and all types. More than fifty faculty are co-editors of publications and textbooks. More than ten faculty's projects have been issued national patents, eight concerning technology transformation. Thirteen technology projects have received the second-place prize of in the Yunnan Science and Technology Progress project, with more than thirty projects receiving first, second or third"Science and Technology Progress" prizes, with one receiving a contribution award for science and technology progress. The faculty have written 2243 academic papers, including 199 published in major academic journals and 31 accepted by the SCI and EI.
The school’s seventy years of development has resulted in the school motto of "Think critically, reflect carefully, behave morally, carry out sincerely." "Reasoning, questioning and pursuing the truth"is our style of study and the style of "teaching by example and developing fully"has proved to be effective and beneficial.
Wenshan University has established collaborative relationship with universities in Europe, America,South and Southeast Asia, such as the United States, Great Britain, Germany, Australia, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, South Korea, etc. Among the universities are Lindenwood University, Tarleton State University, University of New Castles, Hanoi University, Chiangmai University, Jeonju University, etc. Agreements have been signed between Wenshan University and those mentioned above.
Since 1995, The school have invited more than 20 foreign experts to teach English, Thai language and Vietnamese on campus. They are from Great Britain, the United States, Belgium, France, Australia, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Since 2004, the school have recruited more than 300 international students to study on campus who are from the United States, Mexico, Brazil, Finland, Australia, Vietnam, Laos, South Korea, Japan and Singapore. The school also send more than 300 students to study in universities in Thailand and Vietnam, such as Hanoi University, Foreign Languages School of Thai Nguyen University, Chiangmai University, Chamber of Commerce University, etc.
Wenshan University is implementing the government guidelines for further education reform and development. The university continues to focus on building itself into an undergraduate university for applied studies, with an emphasis on minority nationalities, regional issues, and openness. The university focuses on the coordination and appropriate management of resources and structures, maintaining a special focus on the design of the programs, cultivation of talent cultivation, and local economic development.
